Heaphy Hut

While being situated in isolation, this hut has the most enviable outlook over the Heaphy River mouth to the Tasman Sea. It is a high-usage hut for one-night trampers from Karamea, but also the hut of choice for many to enjoy this stunning coastal environment.

This was the next Department of Conservation hut to be replaced. Our work commenced in May 2012 with the piles being driven, ready for the arrival of approximately 40 tonnes of materials and equipment by helicopter from Kohaihai, Karamea. The Team of mostly 3 lived on-site from mid-July, on 10 day stays, to complete the project for public use by 23rd November 2012 and once again on time and on budget! Following this, was the de-commissioning and complete removal of the old hut. Our Team enjoyed this coastal environment, where a spot of fishing and hunting became the regular after-hours recreational activity.
